What is OST File? An Offline Storage File is a Microsoft offline file that holds a copy of your mailbox. OST is a cached file of your mailbox, which holds all the properties of mailbox at Exchange Server. Outlook OST file format can be read by MS Outlook. Content of OST File can not be viewed without conjunction to Exchange Sever. When you work offline, you can add, delete and modify the content just like you do with your mail account while connected to network and all the changes are synchronized with Server when it connects to network. For example, you are sending a mail and the network is not available, then the mail at your end will seem to send but the mail will be stored at Exchange Server and will send when the connection will be available.

Although Exchange Sever mails can be viewed using Outlook Express and Outlook Web Access (OWA) services, but the OST file is created in Outlook only.

Location of OST File: The OST file is located in the Microsoft Application Folder. The default location of OST file is in user account is “\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook”. You can change the default location of OST file by making change in registry value.

OST Corruption: You can view OST mail till the time Exchange Server is responding well. When Exchange Server connection is not available, OST file cannot be accessed. Even after repairs of Exchange Server, the directory services are regenerated and the OST becomes inaccessible from Outlook. The reason behind the unavailable connection can be the corruption in Exchange Server database or any other damage.
